I haven’t done a new sketch since the un-finished (but workable to some extent) animator.

I’ve been doing other projects and contract work, keeping busy. But not doing word-art. :::sigh:::

Now I’ve had a few things flash through my head when I’m waking up that I’d like to realize.

Something akin to scripting the text, however. yikes!
Instead of scripting, maybe more meta-data on each frame (segment of text) is sufficient.

Like the animator.
But with the ability to indicate color, size, duration, etc. for each frame.
Including then the duration of blank spaces.
Currently, the animator has no meta-data, just a collection of frames.

I partly remember seeing rows of crosses and dots,

blown up, centered on the screen… which isn’t required.
But I suppose definigh the position of each element would be useful.

The existing animator would work as a subset of this – centered text, blobs, specific size, each frame the same rate, no blank frames, etc.

One of my texts, 5 emotional spam poems, has been published in The Newark Review 3.0.

Local version, Newark Review version.

This was actually back in January. My blog-posting has been a bit…. slow.

The source video/song/lyrics are so…. abtuse (both obtuse and abstruse) that I wanted to see if I could make anything with them that wasn’t also abtuse.

In a time when the
American dream for $5.95 intrigued
Political scientists.

His voice cracks as he
Told me some advice that every
President ignores.

I wasn’t smart enough
To convince americans
That you could be ok.

Skepticism grows that
The american dream is
An implicit contract.

With decent pay, and
Optimism about the country,
This country is threatened.

Skepticism grows. This
World where a man is increasingly
Sad. Skepticism grows.

Economic statistics
Validate those images:
People working harder.

Cut out of optimism
And comfortably retire.
Next carefully cut.

Shake successfully.
The economy is not
Just sad decisions.

It was a faith that says: Economic

untitled (put the blame on VCR)

VCR. Take

yonder construction

Modified template of single-syllable lines run through jGnoetry (with some manual editing). The syllable-counting engine is imperfect.

I used the default sources, with Shakespeare @ 0%, leaving us with 50% Tristan Tzara and 50% Lawrence Lessig.

I’ve been re-wiring jGnoetry as a side-project (it is OpenSource, after all). I haven’t yet got to changing any functionality — it’s more been about refactoring, separation of presentation and calculation, etc. A good exercise while I think about the program, and it’s implications for TextMunger.

Hitting a syllabic rhythmic structure doesn’t hold a lot of draw, for me [gasp!]. But what I definitely like is the ability to save chunks of the output, and regenerate the gaps — and having said regeneration be from the same markov-model. Or from a different model, but, hopefully, keyed from the ends of the gaps.

The Anderson Poems had some sections I would have liked to have modified — but charNG doesn’t offer a simple way to do that. jGnoetry theoretically allows the use of source-text-as-template, but with random-offset lines I found the experience less than perfect. Not to mention the need to regenerate the corpuses from one application to the other.

blog vs wiki

I’m still grappling with having both a blog and a wiki. I think that blog-posts are a little more ephemeral, or better suited to date-ordering, as they may be multiply classified, whereas the wiki is pre-sorted into sections. Yes, the blog has Categories, which may correspond to wiki Groups. But the blog’s default ordering is time-wise. So the front-end gives us a different viewpoint.

And putting a text in here, first, allows me to stare append notes that might be distracting from the way I think it should be viewed in the wiki.

Joi Ito’s Web: on Comment spam poetry

January 20th, 2006

Mark Dery weighs in on Spam Lit, invoking the name of our dear, revered Marcel Duchamp.

If only Tristan Tzara had lived to read spambot subject lines, some boiler-room hacker’s idea of a foolproof strategy for bluffing your way past spam-killer defenses. “Be godparent or osteology,” admonishes today’s first hunk of junk mail, a Dadaist ultimatum if ever there was one. What mental-ward wisdom hides in this love-it-or-leave-it, my-way-or-the-highway dualism? Does it mean: If you’re not part of a social network, bound by family ties, you’ve got your nose in the boneyard? “Ragweed conjunct Sherlocke,” the next spam asserts, cryptically. A reference to Conan Doyle’s mythical detective?

You have undoubtedly noticed that I chose not to quote the section I referenced above. So go read the whole thing, already.

P.S. I’ve got some spam of my own sliced up in Amazing Text.

Spammers turn to classic prose

Monday, 1 December, 2003, 10:57 GMT
By Mark Ward – BBC News Online technology correspondent

Poetry is probably not top of the list of things you expect to see in the spam and junk mail messages landing in your inbox everyday.

But lots of people are starting to find literary value hidden among the porn, penis patches, generic Viagra deals and mortgage offer

Some have composed poems using the subject lines of the spam they receive; others are creating verse using the strings of strange words that are often found inside spam messages.

A lucky few have even found excerpts of novels buried in spam.

Electronic Poetry Center

The EPC serves as a central gateway to resources in electronic poetry and poetics at the University at Buffalo and on the Web at large. Our aim is simple: to make available a wide range of resources centered on digital and contemporary formally innovative poetries, new media writing, and literary programming.

The EPC itself makes extensive resources available through its E-Poetry and Author libraries. These libraries provide curated lists of resources on a focused range of authors for personal use, research, and teaching. Additionally, the EPC curates lists of links to similar digital and literary projects, related book publishers, literary magazines, and other resources. In addition the EPC offers substantial sound resources that will not be found elsewhere. These include the vast resources of the UBU-EPC MP3 library and the award-winning interview and performances series of LINEbreak.

UPDATE 2012.05.30: Well I’ll be dipped — I encountered the EPC nearly 10 years ago, and then forgot about it. Serves me right! Some links have been updated in the above.
