If you thought the city of Scranton has already gotten its fill of publicity as the setting for the soon-to-air sitcom “The Office,” think again.
“Scranton” or “S-C-R-A-N-T-O-N” was the answer to the 23 Across clue of the New York Times Sunday Crossword puzzle, titled, “Home of the Houdini Museum.“
Officials at the museum, 1433 N. Main Ave., say since Monday they’ve gotten 50 to 60 calls — mostly from out-of-towners — about the clue.
“They want to know if that’s the right answer for the puzzle,” museum administrator Penny Wilkes said. “Then they say, ‘I didn’t know this was in Scranton. This is cool.’”
However, the museum did get one caller who admitted growing up in Scranton but still not knowing about the museum.
Before hanging up, some callers pledged to visit the museum, which honors famous magician Harry Houdini, Ms. Wilkes said.
Administrator John Bravo said he believes they will come.
“There’s great interest in Houdini,” he said. “We get people from all over the world.”

there used to be a houdini hall of fame in niagara falls. it burned down and many artifacts were lost including the water torture cell. they charged too much for admission. really there wasn’t much there although if you were a resident of niagara falls, they used to have one day a year, in january, when you could get into all the museums for free. they don’t do that anymore since the casino has moved into town and niagara is no longer a summer-only attraction.
