Food: Indian Snacks

Indian Snack foods

I was raised in South Dakota and never traveled to India. A few years back I found some imported snack-foods at a shop in Connecticut. Blew my mind and my tongue. Love these things. They’re so unlike anything I grew up with/still present in the US snack-food market. May bear a slight resemblance to snack/nut mixes, but even that is a long shot. The flavors are nowhere close.

separated out by brand/manufacturer

namkeens (salty snack) - review of several snacks from a Boston blog

Spicy Mixture - Hot

made in India
purchased at Ashland market
THIS IS THE HOTTEST I HAVE FOUND. At times, difficult to eat.

Chickpea flour, rice flour, groundnuts (peanuts?), corriander, tumeric, chilli powder, black pepper, salt, curry leaves (weird!), fenugreek, dry ginger, garlic, cumin seeds, cloves, cardamon, cinnamon, nutmace, asafoetida

Best packaging, zip-lock seals, consistently good

Hara Chiwda “sweet rice flakes mix”

14 oz
made in India
purchased at farther market
I avoided eating this for a while; turns out to be salty and sweet and (not-hot) spices. Even AM liked it!

gram pulse flour, peanuts, cashew nut, curry leaves, sesame seed, sugar, raisins (white), spinach, white salt, tumeric, riceflakes, mango powder, mace, nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin powder, dry ginger, black bepper, clove, cardamom, asafoetida, black salt

Extra Hot Hot Mix

not really super hot, but pleasantly hot.  14oz, and it’s been so long since I finished it that I can’t recall anything, other than I liked it.

chick-pea flour, corn oil, lentils, mung-beans, chick-peas, rice flakes, parched rices (bubble)_, peanuts, cashew nuts, raisins, salt, sugar, red peppers, black salt (bitallaban), mustard seeds, asfoetida powder, baking soda, citric acid, and other spices

Mix of Chavana (Farsan)

hotter than the “Extra Hot Hot Mix” w/ sweet bits. Lousy packaging (double-bagged!), but delicious. The back of the bag lists three stores (?)  where it may be bought (???).

$2.49 at the Indian market on Penn Ave, Scranton.

Net Wt: 400g

Besan, Potato Chips, Popcorns, Flattened Rice, Coconut, Flattened Maize, Chana Dal, Mag, Groundnuts, Sesame and Powder of: Iodised Salt, Sugar, Chillies, Mustard, Carway [sic], Cumin, Coriander, Asafoetida, Citric Acid, Sodabicarb [sic], Pepper and spices, Edible Oil.

Laxmi Brand

Bikaneri Sev

Looks somewhat boring and monotone -- all little yellow noodles, plus the big yellow logs that looks like... well, a 4-year old would laugh her head off if they were brown, that’s all I’m saying.

They are spiced with “chilly powder”, black pepper, dry ginger, “long pepper’ cardamom, clove, nutmeg, bishop weed seeds, coriander sees, and fennel seeds.

They taste of awesome.
